June 16th, 2010 - Board of Director's Meeting, 7PM at the Museum

April 25th, 2010 (Sunday) - "And Now.....Mark Twain!", 3PM at the Museum.  A delightful look at the life and work of America's foremost humorist.   This one-person play is full of wit and wisdom and the special brand of story-telling that made him a legend in his time.   A solo performance by Richard Clark who has spent recent years professionally in New York theater and television. 

March 28th, 2010 (Sunday) - "Songs of the Revolution", 2PM at the Museum.  In Colonial Dress, performer Diane Taraz presents the “greatest hits” of the era, wonderful melodies rich in history, and explains the fascinating stories behind them.  Diane takes listeners on a fascinating trip back in time, singing the songs people enjoyed in 1776 – lively drinking songs, laments for beloved soldiers, and ballads created in response to dramatic events of the American Revolution.  She performs many with voice alone, the most authentic style, and also plays guitar and lap dulcimer, a centuries-old instrument with a lovely antique sound.

 

February 24th, 2010 (Wednesday) - "Southborough's Old Burial Ground", 7PM at the Museum.  Society President David Falconi takes a visual tour of Southborough's Old Burial Ground in the comfort of the Historical Museum.  Learn about the various of stones and carving styles of the 18th and 19th centuries.   Find out about some of Southborough's earliest families.

2009

December, 2009 - Our museum is open in December on Tuesday's 10-12PM and Wednesday from 6:30-8PM

December 5th, 2009 - Museum Open House, 10AM-2PM.  Stop in to see our exhibits of historic interest to Southborough and check out our selection of books and other items for sale. Fences of Stone, a history of Southborough, will be on sale for $20 (a savings of $5 off regular price) during the month of December.

October 12th, 2009 - Heritage Day Festivities.   Please stop and visit our booth on Heritage Day at St. Mark's field.

October 11th, 2009 - The Southborough Historical Society invites you to join us for an Open House from 2-6PM.  We are introducing several new exhibits including "The Noble Train of Artillery, 1776", a 16 foot mural by local artist Susan Kallander depicting Gen. Henry Knox's Revolutionary War journey with captured cannon from Fort Ticonderoga to Dorchester Heights which helped drive British troops from Boston.  The ox drawn sleds passed within yards of the museum and is commemorated by a marker in front of the Community House on Main St.  No admission fee.  Refreshments will be served.

February~April, 2009 - Buffalo Soldier Program, 2009 Stony Brook Museum, Inc. will sponsor a series of programs and an impressive collection of artwork depicting the role of the African-American people in our nations military. Programs will be hosted by the Southborough Historical Society in the museum located at 25 Common Street, Southborough, Massachusetts. They are to be held on two Saturdays each month, 10AM - 3PM except for the final event on Sunday, April 19th which will run from 2PM-6PM.

2008

December, 2008 - Southborough Historical Society "Holiday Happenings".   The Southborough Historical Society Museum and Gift Shop will be open for the following events this 2008 holiday season:

December 12th, 2008 - "Authors's Night" - Join us as we welcome local authors of the various books we have in collection.  Speak with the author and have your purchase signed by the author to the special someone on your list.  6-8PM at the Museum

December 7th, 2008 - "Christmas Past" is the theme of the day and our displays; join us for a cup of cider and a sweet and browse our gift shop of historical items for the Southborough History buff on your shopping list.  12-2PM at the Museum

December 6th, 2008 - "Christmas Past" is the theme of the day and our displays; join us for a cup of cider and a sweet and browse our gift shop of historical items for the Southborough History buff on your shopping list.  10-2PM at the Museum

December 5th, 2008 - "Member's Night" - Join us for an evening of sharing memories of Holidays Past in Southborough – Members are encouraged to bring in Photographs to share with the Society (copies we can keep) of holiday or winter memories in Southborough. Refreshments will be served. Public welcome! 6:30-8:30PM at the Museum

October 12th, 2008 - "Commemorating the Lost Souls of Southborough" at the Old Burial Grounds at St. Marks and Common Street from 3-4:30.  Admission is free.  See here for more information.

June 8th, 2008 - "The Worcester Tornado of 1953" will be featured with a visit and presentation by expert and author William F. Chittick.  This event will be held at the Pilgrim Church parish hall.  Start time is 2PM and refreshments will be served following the presentation.

2007

April 25th, 2007 - "Popular Music of the Gaslight Era" will be featured at the Southborough Historical Society's Annual Meeting, April 25 at the Community House, Main Street. The business meeting will be held at 7 p.m. followed by the program at 7:30 p.m.

  Talented musician, John Root of Amherst, will entertain with his tenor voice and mastery of several instruments. Root states that the 1890 - 1920 period in music gave rise to ragtime, blues, marches, gospel, waltzes and songs with a variety of moods and messages. He invites everyone to sing along and learn how America's cultural diversity created unique musical styles.

  The program is partially funded by the Massachusetts Cultural Council and the Southborough Cultural Arts Council and the Southborough Historical Society. The public is invited to enjoy the music free of charge.
 

March 28th, 2007 - "The History of Southville and Cordaville".  Program begins with short business meeting at 7 p.m. followed by speakers - Barbara Donahue - archaeologist and author of "Cordaville, Southborough"s 19th century Mill Village" will talk about Cordaville. Kate Matison, architectural historian and member of the Southborough Historical Commission will speak on Southville. Meeting will be held in the Parish Center of St. Matthews, 105 Southville Road, Southborough.  Open to the public, no admission charge.

2006

December 10th, 2006 - "Christmas Remembered" meeting at the Museum on Sunday, December 10th, starting at 2PM.  Everyone is getting together  to share memories of family traditions  and enjoy the Museum which will be dressed for the occasion.   The meeting is open to the public and refreshments will be served.  Any member requiring transportation should call the Museum at 508-229-8055 by December 8th.

November 11th, 2006 - WWII "Wall of Names" showcase - Southborough Historical Society members have collected newspaper archives, war monument and funeral/cemetery records to create the "Wall of Names" which showcases residents who served in WWII.  It will be unveiled on Veterans Day (Saturday, November 11th) at the Museum from 11:30AM to 1PM.  Residents are welcome to add names and background material on the soldiers.  This exhibit will be on display for November only.

October 4th, 2006 - "Memories of Fayville" presentation - Come share your memories of the good old days of Fayville.  7:00PM at the Southborough Senior Center

July 30th, 2006 - 4th Annual Member Cook-out from 4-6PM on the Museum Lawn.  $5/person of $15/family.  See flyer for details.  RSVP by July 26.  Rain date is August 6th.

April 26th, 2006 - Southborough Historical Society annual meeting at the Knight of Columbus Hall, Main St. in Southborough (next to the Barber Shop).   Agenda includes the election of officers and reports on committees among other items.

March 22nd, 2006 - Program by member Russell Horne titled "Waterpower and Industry".  Stony Brook, a part of Marlborough came into existence as Southborough because of these two elements.  The program will explore the role of colonial industries and settlers in the development of the town.  Taking advantage of the power of "a good run of water", they increased the production of their skills and trades to provide the necessities for the increasing flow of immigrants to America.  Meeting will be held at 7PM at the Southborough Library meeting room, lower level

2005

Dec 7th, 2005 - "George III, the King Who Lost America" by Tony Howes, member of the Sudbury Minute and Militia (a re-enactment group). This will be a presentation on the British situation with respect to the American Revolution with the use of many contemporary  pictures and cartoons to help tell the story.  December 7 at 7 p.m. (please note earlier than usual time) at the Southborough Library meeting room, lower level.
